Why Are You A Catholic?

For you Catholics out there, why are you a Catholic? I will list my reasons for why I am NOT nor will I ever be a Catholic and you can respond accordingly. Maybe I’m not seeing something. So here goes:
Did you know that the Catholic church modified the Ten Commandments? Take out your bible I’m not lying.
Protestant version:
Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
Honour thy father and thy mother
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour
Thou shalt not covet
Catholic version:
Thou shalt not have other gods besides Me
Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain
Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day
Honor thy father and thy mother
Thou shalt not murder
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods
Now let’s look at 9 and 10 of the Catholic version. Technically you can covet everything else your neighbor has besides his house and his goods. You can covet his job, his kids, unless of course those are goods and if kids are goods, why isn’t a wife a good? Or, this was a revision done by the Catholic church (the more obvious choice)
And you can make idols using the Catholic version. That is why the Sabbath is now Sunday in favor of sun worship. And why does the Pope believe he is God?
Here’s a couple of quotes by or about the Pope:
The Pope is not simply the representative of Jesus Christ. On the contrary, he is Jesus Christ Himself, under the veil of the flesh, and who by means of a being common to humanity continues His ministry amongst men … Does the Pope speak? It is Jesus Christ Who is speaking. Does he teach? It is Jesus Christ Who teaches. Does he confer grace or pronounce an anathema? It is Jesus Christ Himself Who is pronouncing the anathema and conferring the grace. Hence consequently, when one speaks of the Pope, it is not necessary to examine, but to obey: there must be no limiting the bounds of the command, in order to suit the purpose of the individual whose obedience is demanded: there must be no cavilling at the declared will of the Pope, and so invest it with quite another than that which he has put upon it: no preconceived opinions must be brought to bear upon it: no rights must be set up against the rights of the Holy Father to teach and command; his decisions are not to be criticized, or his ordinances disputed. Therefore by Divine ordination, all, no matter how august the person may be — whether he wear a crown or be invested with the purple, or be clothed in the sacred vestments: all must be subject to Him Who has had all things put under Him.” -Evangelical Christendom, January 1, 1895, pg. 15, published in London by J. S. Phillips.
“The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Chapter XXVII, p. 218, “Cities Petrus Bertanous”.
“The Pope takes the place of Jesus Christ on earth…by divine right the Pope has supreme and full power in faith, in morals over each and every pastor and his flock. He is the true vicar, the head of the entire church, the father and teacher of all Christians. He is the infallible ruler, the founder of dogmas, the author of and the judge of councils; the universal ruler of truth, the arbiter of the world, the supreme judge of heaven and earth, the judge of all, being judged by no one, God himself on earth.” Quoted in the New York Catechism.
“The Pope is not only the representative of Jesus Christ, he is Jesus Christ himself, hidden under the veil of flesh.” Catholic National July 1895.
“We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty” …Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter of June 20, 1894,
Things that make you go hmmmmmmm……………
But doesn’t their own ten commandments say you shall have no other Gods before me, so how is their leader able to call himself God? But then too, Daniel talked about someone who would do these things such as changing God’s laws.
Daniel 7 has the story.
24And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
25And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Time, times and the dividing of time = 3.5 years = 42 months = 1260 days

First, I will address the points you have made. Then I will tell you why I am Catholic.
    1) The Ten Commandments were not edited, as you charge, by the Church. In fact, you did not correctly list the First Commandment. The First Commandment in the Church’s “version” (for lack of a better word) of the Commandments is the First and Second of the Protestant “version” combined. The Tenth Commandment in the Protestant “version” is a combination of Commandments Nine and Ten in the Catholic “version”. They are the same Commandments, just a different listing. What the First Commandment (Catholic, Second Commandment in Protestant) forbids is idolatry. Idolatry is condemned by the Church (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2112-2113).
    2) Many people have a misconception about the change to Sunday worship. Here is a link that fully explains this: http://www.catholic.com/library/Sabbath_…
    3) The Pope never has and never will claim to be God; this would be heresy. Here is a link that explains the origins of most of your quotes, the rest I will address separately: http://sacrificium-laudis.blogspot.com/2…
When the Pope said that he “holds the place of God Almighty”, it was not a claim to be God or to equality with God. This quote is addressed here: http://www.saint-mike.org/apologetics/qa…
Now, why am I Catholic? The teachings of the Church never contradict each other, they all make sense. I feel that I belong in the Church and know that I am receiving the fullness of truth in the Church.
If you have further questions, please feel free to email me.
    God Bless!
EDIT: @Joseph: The Church does not teach that homosexuality is a sin. The Church teaches that homosexual acts are sinful, but that the person should be received warmly. The Church does not condone homosexual behavior in any way.
EDIT 2: The Book of Revelation does not condemn the Church in any way. There are many factors that come into play, one being that the thing being condemned in Revelation is a city, a place, not an institution. I could lay out all of the points in Revelation that prove that the Church is not being condemned, but I think you may understand it better if you read a paper that a friend of mine wrote. Please email me if you like me to send you the file.

  2. there arny any Protestants, catholics, mormons, Jehovah’s witnesses, Lutherans, methodists, or baptists in heaven
    who is in heaven?
    christians

  3. I was a Catholic for 27 years. I left for some of the reasons stated but there is a thing called Vatican II that happened a little over 40 years ago. Look into that. As for the 10 commandments, I hate to say it but the Catholics came first and actually the Commandments were not originated by Christians. They originated in the Old Testament? And who does the Old Testament belong to??? Not the Catholics or the Protestants. My thoughts and just a few more things for you to think over. I may have practiced for 27 years and walked away but I’m not here to condemn anyone.

  4. 1) This is a rant, not a question.
    2) It’s way too long, and I don’t care to read the bigotry that your church has taught you.
    3) If you studied Christian History, and Catholic Doctrine and Dogma, you would convert to Catholicism. But you won’t, you’ll just keep eating the lies being fed to you, and have hatred and bigotry in your heart.

Here are the actual ten commandments the Catholics use
I am the LORD your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
Honor your father and your mother.
    You shall not kill.
    You shall not commit adultery.
    You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
They are the same commandments and no where in the Bible are the commandments numbered,
I suggest you look elsewhere to learn about the Catholic faith than on some anti-Catholic website. Nowhere in the Cathechism does it say that the pope is Christ. And using sources from the late 1800s is stretching it just a bit.

  9. you are telling me i dont run my church right?,who are you but a liar,we all know who the father of lies is -satin,and you sure follow him dont you.practice the holy rosary, practice make perfect,we love you all,the holy family.

  10. i’m trying to be a catholic now because i’m dead and the demons are trying to take me to hell to do things to me that i don’t want, and my only way to communicate with the living is the internet but people are telling me it is too late to become catholic after i’m dead so now i try not to think about what the demons are going to do with me for all eternity by writing run-on sentences

  11. because my mother made me a Catholic. i didn’t get to choose because i was only a baby.
i love my religion but i don’t believe in every thing they are about like gay marriage for example i agree that they should be aloud to marry.
No religion is prefect just like some muslim believing that if they become suicide bombers and kill aload of innocent people for allah and the greater good or something they will get their cóck sucked by aload of virgins in heaven.

  12. First of all, the Catholic Church did NOT modify the ten commandments. The list you have provided is NOT the Catholic ten commandments. One can easily open the Catechism or any Catholic-approved bible and see this for themselves. The difference is in how the commandments are numbered, and not at all in what they are. Hence, no, you cannot make idols using the Catholic version.
Second, many of those quotes are fake quotes. They were never said by any pope. Many of them are attributed to popes who died years before the dates provided. Plus there isn’t even such a thing as a “New York Catechism.” It doesn’t exist. Go ahead and head to amazon or some other place and try to purchase one. You will be unable to do so because it doesn’t exist. Let me say this as clearly as I can - many anti-Catholic websites will bold facedly lie about the Catholic Church. When determining the voracity of a quote, do a search for it. If you can only find it on anti-Catholic websites, there is a good chance that it is not authentic.
As for why I am Catholic -
1)Of all the Christian denominations, Catholicism is the one most hated and lied about. Not that I want to be hated, but Christ said that his true followers would be, so it is an indication that I am right where I belong.
2)Catholics use logic far more heavily than other denominations. Since it is one of the laws that govern us and since I am very logic-minded, this comes as a good thing.
3)We have an unbroken lineage of popes leading all the way back to Peter. If that ain’t proof, I don’t know what is.
4)The Catholic Church donates more to the needy than any other organization on the planet
5)Other denominations tend to give God as little honor as we give saints, which tells me that they do not truly have love and worship for God.
6)Catholic worship is God centric instead of self centric. In so many other denominations, if a person does not like the manner of worship, they will leave and find another church they like better. In other words, the church they go to is based upon their own preference. Catholics, instead of trying to fit church into their frame of personal preferences, try to align their own preferences with God.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I could list hundreds of reasons why I’m Catholic.
edit - the dark ages lasted nowhere near that long. Where do you people get this stuff?!
edit2 - the Vatican, actually, is NOT in Rome. It is across the river from Rome on a hill of it’s own. If you wish to expand Rome to include the Vatican, then you must also include an 8th hill the Vatican sits on. There is no way, no matter how one might try to spin it, that the Church is on 7 hills.
Let me guess. You were watching Doug Batchelor on BET? He’s charismatic, I’ll give him that, but he’s still a liar and deceiver.

  13. I will take your word it is not a rant. You must be raving then. There was a lot of hot air expended by you in this missive.
    Trolling, keep on trolling
    trolling down the river
Sing to the tune of Plowed Mary.

  14. Well, I was Catholic for really good reasons, but after your rant, I just changed my mind. Now I’m Catholic because I don’t wanna be ANYTHING like you.

  15. I am catholic for the same reasons protestants Tony Blair, Cardinal Newman,Father Neuhaus, Thomas Moore, Dr. David White, Dr. Scott Hahn, etc and other big time protestants converted to catholicism. Not a twerp like you.
You must have just graduated from a 2 week crash course from an online prots ministry and as such, you think you could start your ranting evangelization. LOL

  16. I am always amused by non-Catholics who think they know Catholicism better than Catholics themselves.

  17. i was raised Catholic but am VERY against it!!
Biggest hypocrytical for profit business around.
Let see, its a sin to be homosexual in Catholicism but all men are equal?
hmm, that sounds mutually exclusive to me.
If homosexuality is a sin in Catholicism, why do all our priests get Catholic $$ donations from the parish and they get to molest our children.
That doesen’t sound quite right either , now does it?
